Building a career in commercial construction takes commitment, adaptability, and hard work. So does raising a family.
For Amanda Heberling, Project Engineer at Jordy Construction, those two parts of life aren’t separate stories. They’re both part of who she is.
In this edition of Ask Jordy, we asked Amanda:
“How do you balance being a mother, a wife, and building a career in commercial construction?”
Finding Balance in a Demanding Industry
Commercial construction moves quickly. Projects have schedules to meet, problems to solve, teams to coordinate, and clients who depend on everyone doing their part.
But when the workday ends, many construction professionals step into another important role: being there for their families.
For Amanda, that means balancing her responsibilities as a Project Engineer with being a mother and a wife.
That balance isn’t necessarily about giving every part of life an equal amount of time every day. It’s about understanding what needs your attention, being present in the moment, and having the support of the people around you.
Women Building Careers in Commercial Construction
The construction industry continues to create opportunities for women to build meaningful, long-term careers across project management, engineering, estimating, field operations, leadership, and other areas of the business.
Amanda represents an important part of that future.
Her story also highlights something that can sometimes be overlooked when we talk about careers in construction: the people building our communities have lives, families, goals, and responsibilities outside the jobsite.
Being a dedicated professional and a dedicated parent don’t have to be competing identities.
They can be part of the same story.
The People Behind the Projects
At Jordy Construction, relationships have been at the center of how we do business since 1958.
Those relationships aren’t limited to clients, subcontractors, architects, and project partners. They begin with the people who make up our own team.
When employees are able to grow professionally while continuing to prioritize the people and responsibilities that matter to them personally, they bring that experience and perspective back to their work.
That makes stronger individuals, stronger teams, and ultimately stronger projects.
More Than a Job in Construction
A career in commercial construction can be demanding, but it can also provide opportunities to learn, lead, solve problems, build relationships, and see the tangible results of your work throughout the community.
Amanda’s story is a reminder that there isn’t only one definition of what a construction professional looks like.
She is a Project Engineer.
She is building a career.
She is a wife.
She is a mother.
And all of those roles contribute to the person she brings to Jordy Construction every day.
